Marcus ist Gründer und Main Act der Speaker Consultancy Speakery in Taufkirchen, nahe München. Hier bringt er Menschen das Sprechen und Präsentieren bei. Seine Qualifikation dazu? Eine der spannendesten Karrieren, die wir überhaupt bei irgendjemand kennengelernt haben. Oder wie viele Performance Künstler kennen Sie?
Das gemütliche, oberbayerische Taufkirchen ist eigentlich einer der unwahrscheinlichsten Orte, um jemanden wie Marcus John Henry Brown zu treffen. Der 53-jährige gebürtige Brite leitet mit Speakery aus Taufkirchen nicht nur eines der feinsten Präsentations-Trainings in Deutschland. Er hat auch eine Karriere hinter sich, die, fast zwingend, von Großbritannien über viele Bühnen nach Taufkirchen führen musste. Aber warum hier und warum ausgerechnet in Taufkirchen? Dazu muss man sich ein wenig auf den ungewöhnlichen Menschen Marcus John Henry Brown einlassen.
Bekannt geworden ist Marcus Brown vor allem als Performance Künstler mit Nähe zum Marketing. Ich selbst lernte ihn über eine ziemlich ungewöhnliche Kreativ-Wanderung kennen, die er – gecovert von W&V und Horizont – von München nach Hamburg machte. Was ich damals von Ferne irgendwie seltsam fand, sollte sich als viel programmatischer herausstellen als ich dachte. Denn Marcus ist seit Jahren klar auf seiner Heldenreise – und die hat eben viel mit Bewegung und Veränderung zu tun.
Das Gesamtkunstwerk Marcus John Henry Brown
Marcus kam Anfang 20 nach Deutschland und war ziemlich von sich überzeugt. „Ich dachte zuerst, dass ich ein absoluter Rockstar bin. Und dann lernte ich wenig später schnell, dass das nicht so einfach wird.“ Deutsch lernen, kulturell ankommen, junger Vater sein in einem fremden Land. Statt sofort durchzustarten, musste Marcus erstmal zur Ausländerbehörde und lernen, wie das deutsche Steuersystem funktioniert.
Sein Erweckungsmoment fand an einem denkbar ungewöhnlichen Ort statt. Denn es war ein Copy Shop, in dem er gerade die Powerpoints einer Consultancy durchkopierte, wo ihm sein Interesse am Präsentieren klar wurde. Wahrscheinlich ist Marcus einer der wenigen Menschen weltweit, die sich beim Kopieren von Berater-Präsentationen in ein Medium verliebten.

Und wie sollte es auch anders sein: Natürlich landete Marcus irgendwann in einer Agentur, wo er sich mit dem Schaffen von Narrativen für Marken beschäftigte. „Agenturjobs selbst fand ich okay. Aber: Ich fand heraus, dass ich Pitches liebte. Nicht mal zwingend das Business. Sondern den Performance Teil – das Präsentieren“. Und Marcus präsentierte. Bei Kunden und in Keynotes, wo er vor allem über seine Arbeit und seine Projekte redete. Bei einer dieser Präsentationen kam dann der zweite Heureka Moment: „You could do a performance with this“.
Ab 2014 entwickelte sich der Agenturmensch Marcus Brown immer mehr zum Performance Künstler Marcus John Henry Brown. Und das im Rahmen eines sehr ungewöhnlichen, Alter-Ego-getriebenen Performance Programms, mit dem er auf großen Bühnen auftrat. Im Mittelpunkt dabei: Die Spannung zwischen Individuum, Welt und – tatsächlich – oft auch Marketing als kritischem, philosophischen, ironischen Diskurs. Eine Welt, in der Charaktere in der Krise den Ausgleich mit und manchmal auch den Ablass von der Welt suchen, die sie (mit)geschaffen haben. Dabei steht das Präsentieren immer als zentrales Konzept mit auf der Bühne. Nicht Keynotes nennt Marcus diese Auftritte sondern „Presenterventions“ (hier eine kleine Übersicht auf Youtube).
In der „The Passing“ Reihe schlüpfte er in die Rolle des Influencer-Beamten Johnston, der Zwiesprache mit der AI Rachel hielt. Es folgten (neben vielen anderen Formaten) die Live “Presenterventions“ Hustleology, die eine wilde Mischung aus Mythologie, Fake-Religion und Business Kritik ist. Dann das verlegte Gedicht „A Wicked Pack of Cards“ und das Buch „The Hustleverse“ („Wer das gelesen hat, kennt mich“). Seine letzte Performance hieß „Hustle Royale“, in der es mit vielen autobiografischen Elementen um die Verbindung von Arbeit und mentaler Gesundheit ging. Kurz: Marcus Browns Werk ist komplex und durchaus konfliktgetrieben. Aber er produziert kreativ eben in einem Jahr halt auch mehr als viele andere in einem ganzen Leben. Alles kommt zu einem Preis.

Speakery: Der Trickster und das Präsentieren
Performance Art schaffte Marcus eine Art Freiheit, sich auszudrücken. Dass dafür viel Struktur, viel Erfahrung und viel Arbeit notwendig ist, öffnete ihm die Tür zu „Speaker Trainings“, die er anfangs noch nebenbei anbot. Mittlerweile ist mit „Speakery“ daraus Marcus‘ Hauptthema geworden. Aus dem eigenen Schmerz beim Auftritt wurde eine Lösung: „Ich habe über die Zeit festgestellt, dass es das ist, was mir Spaß macht: Menschen beizubringen, angstfrei auf die Bühne zu gehen und sie selbst zu sein. Sich zu präsentieren. Das kann ich.“
Speakery ist so etwas wie die zahme Version von Marcus, die sich aus dem Performance Künstler entwickelt hat. Im Rahmen von Speakery bringt Marcus heute Menschen bei, wie sie auf der Bühne Präsenz entwickeln. Das geht live in seinem Speakery-Studio bei München oder auch im Rahmen von Trainings, die Marcus auch vor Ort durchführt. Und dass es auch da ein stückweit um eine persönliche Challenge geht, wird schnell offensichtlich, wenn Marcus bemerkt, dass es beim Sprechen immer um den Kampf gegen einen Confidence Trickster gehe – diese Stimme, die dir sagt, dass du etwas nicht kannst.
Und da sind wir wieder.
Bei der Frage, wie ein ungewöhnlicher Mensch, wie Marcus Brown, ausgerechnet nach Taufkirchen kommt. Die Antwort lautet wahrscheinlich, dass der „Trickster“, mit dem Marcus Zeit seines Lebens kämpft, ihn hierhin geführt hat. „Um hierher zu kommen, bin ich durch einen langen, mühsamen Prozess gegangen, von dem ich damals nicht wusste, dass es ein langer, mühsamer Prozess wird.“ Und die vorläufig letzte Iteration dieses Prozesses findet sich nun eben mit einem Speaker Studio im Voralpenland oder in einer VC mit Menschen, die gutes Präsentieren lernen wollen, statt.

Mit Speakery sieht sich Marcus vor allem als Producer, nicht nur als Trainer freien Sprechens. Denn Marcus geht es um die Geschichten hinter dem Menschen und die Struktur, die es dazu braucht und vor alle, wie man sie löst. „Die meisten Probleme, die man auf die Bühne mitnimmt, hätte man durch gute Vorbereitung nicht mitgenommen.“ Es geht um Arbeit und die Vorbereitung, die jede Sprecherin und jeder Sprecher in eine perfekte Show stecken kann, wenn man herausragend präsentieren will.

Dabei nimmt Marcus sehr viel mit von dem, was er als Performance Künstler gelernt hat. Denn das Konstruieren von Plots, Welten und Charakteren für die Bühne spielt auch bei Speakery eine zentrale Rolle in der Didaktik. Aber ist “Speakery“ jetzt das Ende des Performance Künstlers Marcus John Henry Brown? „Oh, absolut. Meine Priorität ist es jetzt, CEOs, Bürgermeister:innen, Professor:innen, Autor:innen – und jedem anderen, der es braucht – beizubringen, wie man besser auf der Bühne wird.“
Seinen Cofidence Trickster hat Marcus als produktiven Widersacher nach Taufkirchen übrigens mitgenommen. Denn Widerstände zu überwinden, eigene Themen offenzulegen und in neue Narrative zu überführen – das ist die Mission von Speakery. Klingt therapeutisch? „Absolut.“ Sagt Marcus. „Meine Sessions sind sehr intim, weil es immer darum geht, persönliche Herausforderungen und den Trickster zu überwinden – und ja, das hat durchaus etwas Therapeutisches.“ Aber – so addiert er noch – „in Taufkirchen bekommt niemand etwas mit. Keine Sorge.“
